Enjoy a Live Performance, Take in a Gallery Exhibit, or Cozy Up at a Local Wine Bar
While Newberg is a fairly quiet town after dinner on most nights, those looking for fun after dark will find both new and nostalgic spots to enjoy in walkable downtown Newberg on the weekends.
The Chehalem Cultural Center’s brand-new LaJoie Theater opened in September and has a calendar of shows lined up throughout its inaugural year, from concerts to dance performances to vaudeville. Make sure to leave a little extra time to explore the Cultural Center’s three galleries beforehand, featuring ever-changing exhibits by local artists.
The classic marquee sign and the smell of fresh popcorn greet you at the historic Cameo Theater for an old-fashioned movie experience. The family-run theater (which also runs the 99w Drive-In) retains many of its art deco details from when it was built in 1937 and plays first-run movies and the occasional revival. In lieu of a commercial preview before each show, a silent film of historic Downtown Newberg is shown.
A new addition to downtown is Arcade Club, recently opened in a Quonset hut, which features arcade games from the 1980s – think pinball and Pac-Man. It’s the owner’s passion project and features about 20 of his collection of 100 games. Entry is $5 per person for unlimited play (though some games require quarters, like pinball).
A few blocks away, in another Quonset hut that was originally built as a storage facility during World War II, Artist Block Winery has opened a stylish wine bar and gallery space. Open on Friday and Saturday evenings (as well as during the day on Sunday), they welcome walk-ins or reservations (via the Artist Block Tock page) for glass pours, wine tasting flights, and elegant cheese and charcuterie boards. The winery’s main tasting room is in Dundee and also hosts Foodie Friday movie nights from October to April.
Chehalem Winery’s downtown tasting room and wine bar is housed in a charming brick building at the east end of downtown (just across from the Bite of Newberg food cart pod) and is open until 8 pm on Friday and Saturday nights. Many of these feature the winery’s “after dark events:” live music, bingo games, and other fun. Click here to see their full calendar.
For a casual nightcap, Social Goods is the place to enjoy a local craft beer or cider, with dozens on tap, or Barley & Vine Tavern, which touts “beer and wine from down the road and around the world.” Excellent craft cocktails with local spirits can be found at Ruddick/Wood’s Tavern. And for late-night eats and drinks, Old Town Bar & Grill is open nightly until midnight and 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays.
