Family Friendly Road-Trip Ideas
If you’re looking for family friendly road-trip ideas, it’s the perfect season to explore the great outdoors in Newberg – the gateway to the Willamette Valley! Travelers planning the perfect trip to wine country with little ones in tow can also enjoy a Taste of the Newberg area’s finest Parks and Recreation opportunities.
Visit Champoeg State Park and walk or ride the trails along the Willamette River.
Champoeg State Heritage Area features a rare combination of history, nature, and recreation. Situated south of Newberg along the scenic Willamette River, Champoeg’s forests, fields, and wetlands re-create the landscape of a bygone era.
This is the site where Oregon’s first provisional government was formed by a historical vote in 1843. A thriving town of 200 was established, only to be buried by water during a great flood in 1861. This rich history earns the park’s placement on the National Register of Historic Places. Enjoy walking or biking on the paved trails that hug the river, while passing historical landmarks along the way. Play the 18-hole disc golf course under the oak trees, relax at the multitude of scenic picnic areas, or fish or kayak from dock on the Willamette River.
The Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center in Newberg is a great place to visit for both indoor and outdoor activities that the whole family can enjoy. Swimming is available for all ages, just visit their website for details on free-swim access, and current rules and regulations. The daily drop-in admission is good for all facility amenities (age and schedule permitting), group fitness and water exercise classes (special rate for classes).
This aquatic leisure complex is complete with dressing rooms, showers, saunas, hot tub, lazy river, vortex, kiddie area, deep water tank, and lap lanes; and a separate area with an aquatic athletic venue complete with bleachers. Make sure to take advantage of this great facility while staying in Newberg!
Bald Peak has the most amazing views of Newberg, perfect for a family picnic and stroll through the Douglas firs. Located just 9 miles northwest of downtown Newberg, Bald Peak State Park provides incredible views of several volcanic peaks. On a clear day, you can see Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens, and even Mt. Rainier. The park offers picnicking and play areas. The day use only park offers picnic tables and a hiking trail for views of the Willamette Valley and the Cascade Range.
Ewing Young Park has great options for the kiddos!
Chehalem Skatepark, Chehalem BMX Track, disc golf, play equipment, and a variety of trails.
Get that out-of-town feeling on an approximately one mile of easy-to-moderate sloping, wooded, loop trail created by Chehalem Parks & Rec, including a substantial footbridge, with trail sections along Chehalem Creek. These trails wind around the perimeter of Ewing Young Park and cross the disc golf.
The world-class Chehalem Skatepark course features both big and small ramps, good vertical, one quarter-pipe, one half-pipe, as well as bleachers, a covered picnic area and a playground. There is also a separate beginner area with small ramps and gentle slopes. CPRD is proud that Olympic champion Shawn White has skated in the park twice and told the park caretaker that this is one of his favorites because of its large size and how well-maintained it is.
Chehalem BMX Track is a nationally certified USA BMX (American Bicycle Association) track, featuring features five straight stretches, four corners including a U-turn, a full rhythm section, and many jumps into corners.
Hit the links at Chehalem Glenn Golf Course
Chehalem Glenn Golf Course sprawls across beautifully hilly terrain. The golf course is as scenic as it is challenging with elevated tees and greens that overlooks the surrounding hills and valleys. The beauty and intensity of the course has given Chehalem Glenn Golf Course a reputation as one of the “greater Portland area’s must-play courses.” There are beautiful walking trails along the golf course to explore and enjoy for those not actively playing on the course.
If playing 18 holes isn’t on the agenda, try disc golf! Disc golf is played much like golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, though, players use a flying disc or Frisbee®. Newberg offers several disc golf locations, including Herbert Hoover Park, Ewing Young Park, and Champoeg State Park.
Central Newberg Urban Trails
Central Newberg hosts urban walking trails that wind through historic downtown, and surrounding residential Newberg. The official trailhead is located at Herbert Hoover Park. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy this educational walk through Newberg.
Family Friendly Outdoor Tastings
We understand the importance of flexibility when crafting the perfect day in wine country with kids in tow. A welcoming atmosphere is everything, as well as room to let the kids roam. These Newberg imbiberies are a great place to bring your kids.
Although many of these locations are open and available to enjoy all year round, we highly recommend an end-of-Summer or early Fall experience to amplify the views and extraordinary foliage!
Newberg has many playgrounds located right in downtown that are close to overnight accommodations, as are Newberg’s historic downtown shops, restaurants and galleries. Explore the Chehalem Parks & Rec website, and Taste Newberg for more information!
