Champoeg State Park

Visit Champoeg State Park and walk or ride the trails along the Willamette River.

Champoeg State Heritage Area features a rare combination of history, nature, and recreation. Situated south of Newberg along the scenic Willamette River, Champoeg’s forests, fields, and wetlands re-create the landscape of a bygone era.

This is the site where Oregon’s first provisional government was formed by a historical vote in 1843. A thriving town of 200 was established, only to be buried by water during a great flood in 1861. This rich history earns the park’s placement on the National Register of Historic Places. Enjoy walking or biking on the paved trails that hug the river, while passing historical landmarks along the way. Play the 18-hole disc golf course under the oak trees, relax at the multitude of scenic picnic areas, or fish or kayak from dock on the Willamette River.

Bald Peak State Park

Hike Bald Peak State Park

Bald Peak has the most amazing views of Newberg, perfect for a family picnic and stroll through the Douglas firs. Located just 9 miles northwest of downtown Newberg, Bald Peak State Park provides incredible views of several volcanic peaks. On a clear day, you can see Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens, and even Mt. Rainier.  The park offers picnicking and play areas. The day use only park offers picnic tables and a hiking trail for views of the Willamette Valley and the Cascade Range.

Ewing Young Skate Park

Ewing Young Park has great options for the kiddos!

Chehalem Skatepark, Chehalem BMX Track, disc golf, play equipment, and a variety of trails.

Get that out-of-town feeling on an approximately  one mile of easy-to-moderate sloping, wooded, loop trail created by Chehalem Parks & Rec, including a substantial footbridge, with trail sections along Chehalem Creek. These trails wind around the perimeter of Ewing Young Park and cross the disc golf.

The world-class Chehalem Skatepark course features both big and small ramps, good vertical, one quarter-pipe, one half-pipe, as well as bleachers, a covered picnic area and a playground. There is also a separate beginner area with small ramps and gentle slopes. CPRD is proud that Olympic champion Shawn White has skated in the park twice and told the park caretaker that this is one of his favorites because of its large size and how well-maintained it is.

Chehalem BMX Track is a nationally certified USA BMX (American Bicycle Association) track, featuring features five straight stretches, four corners including a U-turn, a full rhythm section, and many jumps into corners.

Chehalem Glenn Golf Course

Hit the links at Chehalem Glenn Golf Course

Chehalem Glenn Golf Course sprawls across beautifully hilly terrain. The golf course is as scenic as it is challenging with elevated tees and greens that overlooks the surrounding hills and valleys. The beauty and intensity of the course has given Chehalem Glenn Golf Course a reputation as one of the “greater Portland area’s must-play courses.” There are beautiful walking trails along the golf course to explore and enjoy for those not actively playing on the course.

Disc Golf

Disc golf is a fun activity for the whole family to enjoy together!

If playing 18 holes isn’t on the agenda, try disc golf! Disc golf is played much like golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, though, players use a flying disc or Frisbee®. Newberg offers several disc golf locations, including Herbert Hoover Park, Ewing Young Park, and Champoeg State Park.

Although many of these locations are open and available to enjoy all year round, we highly recommend an end-of-Summer or early Fall experience to amplify the views and extraordinary foliage!

Newberg has many playgrounds located right in downtown that are close to overnight accommodations, as are Newberg’s historic downtown shops, restaurants and galleries. Explore the Chehalem Parks & Rec website, and Taste Newberg for more information!
