An Art Lover’s Guide to Newberg in Autumn

The abundance of art in Newberg is one of the destination’s best-kept secrets. From galleries to studios, through wineries and beyond, visitors and collectors will find an abundance to explore – especially this fall, when the annual Art Harvest Studio Tour celebrates its 30th year, and the Chehalem Cultural Center debuts a brand-new performing arts theater.

Art Harvest Studio Tour

Each fall, artists throughout Yamhill County open their studios once a year for a peek behind the scenes into their creative process. 2024 marks the 30th season of this beloved event, and artists will host open houses on the weekends of Oct. 4-6 and Oct. 11-13. Admission buttons are $10 to visit any or all of the studios and can be purchased on-site, including at the Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce, which is hosting a Newberg artists show from Sept. 3-27. The Chehalem Cultural Center will also feature a show from Sept. 3-24, including a piece from each artist participating in the Art Harvest Studio Tour of Yamhill County.

Downtown Galleries

Art Elements Gallery has been a beacon for the arts in downtown Newberg since opening in 2010. Featuring the work of nearly 60 Oregon artists who draw inspiration from this region, exhibitions change every ten weeks and kick off with an opening reception. See their website for details. Gary Buehler’s charming Blue Trout Gallery recently expanded to encompass the entire building, where visitors can view his beautiful paintings within the artist’s workspace (open Thursday to Saturday). The Chehalem Cultural Center is downtown Newberg’s largest public art gallery, with three gallery spaces showcasing regional artists in ever-changing exhibitions. It is free to the public and open Tuesday through Saturday. The CCC unveiled its long-awaited Performing Arts Wing this September, including the new La Joie Theater, which already has an exciting lineup of music, dance, and theater shows scheduled this season.

Art in Unexpected Places

On the first Friday of each month, downtown Newberg celebrates local artists and makers with the First Friday Art Walk (5-8 pm), when many shops downtown are open late and offer specials, artist receptions, pop-ups, and live music. Stroll through town using the new Newberg Public Art Map to find Instagram-worthy murals and impressive sculptures. The Allison Inn & Spa has a stellar art collection throughout the halls and grounds, curated by Art Elements. Several of Newberg’s family-run wineries are owned by folks who are artists in their own right. A few that display their art in their tasting rooms alongside their wines are: Trisaetum, The Potter’s Vineyard, Bellingar Estate, and Artist’s Block. As any visitor will see, art abounds in Newberg.
